Digital painting improvement by Carlo-Marcelo Digital painting improvement by Carlo-Marcelo
Edit: Updated with most recent artwork.

Shown above are digital paintings I have done since day 1. It took me about 3 days to finally figure out what I was doing. It was frustrating at first since I haven't done any paintings(both traditional and digital) in my life before. I've only been using a pencil, eraser and a piece of paper for my drawings.

I was also new to Photoshop and didn't know that it was possible to rotate the canvas. It was something I do a lot when drawing on paper to support my best stroke angles. It took me a couple of days to get used to the unusual angles now I don't rotate the canvas anymore.

Thank you for your time!

So... How did you manage to improve so much so fast? x: More specifically.... I still don't quite get it after years of having a tablet. D:

I'm used to drawing precisely using a pencil on paper. I applied the same logic in digital painting but I couldn't get used to it in the first two days. I was already trying for a good quality art on day one and there was just too much pressure. Finally on the 3rd day, I just decided to not worry about the end result and just finish some decent looking artwork. So I painted over mistakes instead of erasing them like I would if I were using pencil. And I think that was the biggest improvement for me. Paint over mistakes was something I wasn't used to in the past. I hope this makes sense!

Oh, okay. Yeah, that makes sense. I was also paper-and-pencil person before I got a tablet. Still been using an eraser and undo button the whole time. I bet that's part of why it's so hard for me to paint with traditional paints, I'm stuck on removing mistakes. I'll try that and see if it helps. Thank you. :)

Was it spending more time on each piece?  Because it's clear you had a great knowledge of technique from the start.

I've been drawing characters before using a pencil, so I kind of had the idea it was just more difficult for me to apply it on a tablet. It took me about the same amount of time to finish the face, hair and body on the last 3 pieces. What took me forever to finish on the last two were the armor design. I must have changed the armor designs dozens of times.

Oh thank you! I have them uploaded in my gallery but most of them were colored but the texture and style is similar to when they were on paper. I've only done pencil traditional work. :)
